Logistics is a hugely competitive industry, with hundreds of large and small operators in the UK alone. Winning new contracts and retaining the existing ones is the lifeblood of the industry – provide a good service at a good price and clients will remain happy. The sales director in a logistics company will oversee a team of sales managers and a sales team to seek out new opportunities and maximise them.
The role might not involve any face-to-face sales at all; it could purely be an oversight task, providing goals and direction to the team under your directorship. Alternatively, it could involve executive sales, meeting and networking with players in the target companies to secure deals.
As a strategic level, the sales director’s success will be judged on the amount of new business he or she brings in to the company. That means that a firm and in-touch command of the managers and sales force will be required, whilst allowing talented sales professionals to go about their business as long as they are fulfilling the company’s aims and generating profits.
Sales Director skills required
A demonstrable excellence in running a team of sales professionals will be required to perform this task, preferably at director level but managing a team will be a sufficient pre-requisite for many sales directorships.
Communication between the head office and the managers will be an important part of the job, so a lively and positive personality will be required. There will also probably be a good deal of contact with executive-level employees of target client companies, so experience of sales with this level of office will be hugely advantageous.
An in-depth knowledge of the industry in which the company operates will also help, as there are certain elements of logistics that pertain only to specific sectors, such as legal issues and matters of seasonality.

Located just over the River Tyne from Newcastle, Gateshead has always been somewhat overshadowed and culturally engulfed by its neighbour in the public conscious, but it’s a happening town in its own right, with a huge amount going for it in terms of art, sport and industry. Gateshead was busy during the Industrial Revolution, with coal mining and ironworks playing important roles; the town produced ships’ anchors and chains for which demand was insatiable.
As the availability of electric energy took hold, Gateshead would become known as a cable manufacturing town, and the first trans-Channel telegraph wire was made there, as was half of the first transatlantic one. Sir Joseph Swan, one of those credited with the invention of the lightbulb, lived and performed his experiments in Gateshead, and it is thought that his house was the world’s first to be electrified for lighting. Modern Gateshead is still thriving. It is home to Europe’s largest shopping centre, the Metro Centre, as well as several trading and industrial estates. Gateshead, and its neighbour Newcastle, are ideal places to look for a Sales Director position. The region is doing well economically, and there’s still a good deal of industry to complement the huge opportunity offered by its retail sector.
Culturally, Gateshead is head and wings above many larger towns and cities. Right at its south point is Antony Gormley’s towering Angel of the North statue, and at its northernmost point are the Sage Gateshead and the Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art, which occupies what was a flour mill. Tow of the north’s most iconic bridges, the “Blinking Eye” and the steel arch Tyne Bridge, both join Newcastle with Gateshead (along with five others). Gateshead stadium plays host to top athletics meetings, and for a month in 2006 was the location of the world 100 m sprint record (9.77 seconds) set by Asafa Powell.
