In a candidate-driven market, the best talent can take their pick of the best roles, meaning the companies need to work harder than ever to attract new people to their businesses.
Of course, working in a recruitment consultancy means we know that marketing is playing an increasing important role in attracting candidates – but there are many things companies can do themselves to help extend their reach:
-
Be more active on social media
Sounds obvious doesn’t it? But you’d be surprised at how many companies have a very limited social media output. Most candidates are very active on social media so it is a brilliant tool to communicate, engage and inform potential employees about your organisation. The most popular channels are LinkedIn, Twitter & Facebook, with LinkedIn being the primary channel for professionals. Don’t discount others though, some are particularly relevant to certain industries – for example, Instagram is most used by more visual professionals, such as those working in the fashion retail sector. Research your target market to see where they are most likely to hang out.
-
Be transparent
Often what sells a role to a potential employee isn’t a significant salary increase (although this can help!) it’s your company’s culture. Therefore, it helps if you can publicise online what it’s like to work there, painting an accurate and realistic picture. Being open and honest helps to build trust & respect for your brand. Using channels such as YouTube and Facebook to share video content is a great way of reaching your target audience & fast. For the working demographic of 25 & under, YouTube is the second most used search engine after Google.
-
Keep your ear to the ground
Keep an eye on what people are saying about you online & take part in conversations where appropriate, to show candidates that you care about what others are saying about your business. It’s also worth watching what your competitors are doing, and how they are using their own social networks for recruiting new talent. Another useful activity is to listen online to what your own employees are saying, as this can provide invaluable insights as to how happy your existing team is. At the current appetite for social media continues to snowball, using social media channels to help fill your recruitment pipeline is vital in keep ahead in the marketplace.
