IMO symposium planned for Thursday

This week will see the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) host a symposium about sustainability. Scheduled for Thursday (September 26th) this event is designed to let stakeholders, such as industry and member states, have the chance to talk about sustainability. It will take place on World Maritime Day, which this year has been given the theme 'Sustainable Development: IMO's contribution beyond Rio+20' according to the organisation. Interested parties can download a symposium background publication from the organisation's website, where it is also possible to find a programme for the event. The body, a UN agency, is responsible for making sure shipping is secure and safe, and preventing ship pollution. Called 'A Concept of a Sustainable Maritime Transportation System,' this week's symposium event is designed to give an overview of how maritime transport contributes to sustainable development from an economic, social and environmental point of view. It's set to feature sessions on the global context of sustainable development and the way new technological developments can help, for example. A number of different speakers are set to be there, including Koji Sekimizu, who is the secretary-general of the organisation itself. United Nations Environment Programme executive director Achim Steiner will also speak through a video link-up. It comes after Mr Sekimizu spoke positively about the Maritime Labour Convention entering into force. This is a treaty which the International Labour Organization (ILO) has adopted. “The entry into force of the MLC convention marks significant progress in the recognition of seafarers’ roles and the need to safeguard their well-being and their working conditions," Mr Sekimizu commented towards the end of last month. "This is a truly important landmark for seafarers; and for shipping, on which the global economy relies.” Using the treaty's abbreviated name, he added: "IMO stands ready to support the implementation of MLC 2006 and looks forward to working with its Member States on issues of mutual concern, as we have successfully done in the past.” Looking for logistics jobs?
