Hotseat: Jack Currell on beginning his career in recruitment

Blog

We sat down with Jack for a chat about why he chose a career in recruitment and what he thinks of the role so far.
1. What attracted you most about a career in recruitment?
For me it was the chance to produce my own work and own business. Although I am working for the wider company it very much feels like I’m running my own business and producing my own pipeline and ultimately if I don’t get the work done, it’s me that looses out.
2. How would you describe the beginning of your career in recruitment? What did you do in your first few weeks?
It’s had its ups and downs, it can be a little bit of a rollercoaster but ultimately, I would say it’s been quite positive. I’ve had some really good conversations and I’ve made placements, so yeah, overall pretty positive!
3. What has been your biggest success in recruitment so far?
Probably making my first placement within the first 8 weeks on the job, that’s always positive! You could say it was a little bit outside my patch because it was in Italy, but every win is a win…
4. How would you describe your working environment?
Fast paced, enjoyable and energetic. Everyone here is always up for a laugh but everyone works hard and gets on with the job as well, there's a good balance.
5. What do you think makes a good recruitment consultant?
A good recruitment consultant is someone who listens. If you’ve been on the phone for a long amount of time talking to someone and in the end you’ve got nothing from it, then what is the point? So, you have to listen but ultimately you have to understand; what it is your candidate or client is looking for, where to put people, who to talk to and just be having the right conversations I suppose.
6. What is your favourite thing about the job?
My favourite thing…the tap! A hot water tap that makes instant cups of tea! But seriously, my favourite thing is that it’s like I’m running my own business. Ultimately, I’m in charge of my own pipeline and that’s what I enjoy.
7. Finally, what advice would you give to somebody considering a career in recruitment?
