Dan Rowe on moving from industry to recruitment

Dan joined Cast UK in 2010 after working in the Logistics and Transport industry for over 12 years in both operational and commercial roles. Dan has previously worked for employers including Trakm8, Geopost, P&O Ferrymasters, D Morgan PLC and Montgomery Transport. Dan is the Managing Consultant of our Southern Logistics Team, recruiting in the Logistics, Warehousing and Transport sectors, where a lot of his previous experience has been attained. Here’s what he had to say:
1. What attracted you to a career change to the recruitment industry?
Recruitment wasn’t a career that I had ever considered and I actually registered with Cast UK as a candidate looking for a new role in logistics following a 7-month trip spent in Asia and Australia. That being said, once I had met with Wayne & Gary I was impressed with the culture and ambition of the business. Moving into specialist recruitment gave me an opportunity to utilise my industry knowledge and a chance to play my part in growing this exciting organisation.
2. How did you find the transition from industry to a career in recruitment?
It was tough! It was a completely different environment than what I was used to and it took a bit of time to get up to speed. However, the team were really supportive and over time I built up a client-base and I have enjoyed the journey ever since.
3. How would you describe the working environment at Cast UK?
Cast UK put a lot of time and effort to ensure that we are given every opportunity to succeed. We have a great blend of people in the business, all of whom I am happy to have a beer with!
4. How useful has your industry knowledge and experience been in your new career?
I think it has really helped me. To start with my first placement in recruitment was with my previous employer but from a client and candidate perspective the level of understanding I have enables me to provide a thorough and expert service.
5. What is the most rewarding aspect of the job?
There are many rewarding aspects to this job. Externally, I take pride in ensuring that both my clients and candidates receive the best service possible and I work hard to build strong relationships which are valuable to not only ourselves but our clients as well. Internally, I really enjoy helping my team develop in their roles and achieve their individual targets.
6. What advice would you give to any industry professional considering a career in recruitment?
Do your research! Just having an industry background won’t make you successful in recruitment. It does help but you still need to work hard and be resilient as you will receive knocks along the way. The role can be very rewarding but the first 6/12 months are tough.
