Companies are often oblivious to the talent staring them right in the face, and go to great lengths to source managers and directors from the wider jobs market. But recruiting internally is a much more cost-effective and less risky option. The company knows the employees; their confidence and attitudes are not in question; and they already know the company’s philosophy, customers and goals. In larger organisations, the selection of in-house candidates is carried out by an internal recruitment manager.
In many ways, the role is similar to a general recruitment manager, but recruiting internally brings with it its own challenges and opportunities. Openings can come about through word of mouth recommendations and the analysis of particularly successful operatives within the company. Talent often stands out, and recognizing that talent makes employees feel more valued and increases loyalty. But also, recruiting internally often means that the successful candidate’s previous position needs to be filled, and where this cannot also be done internally, a more traditional approach to recruitment needs to be initiated.
The skills required
A background in recruitment will be of benefit to candidates for internal recruitment managers, as many of the demands are the same regardless of where recruits come from. However you need to demonstrate that you can absorb yourself into the culture of a company and have multiple channels of communication open with departmental heads in order to identify the best talent.
Prudence is also required here – not all managers will be enthusiastic about potentially losing their brightest and best to another department, but through reassurance that their replacement will be sought conscientiously and quickly, such concerns can be assuaged if you have the right approach and ability. Your main goal, however, will be to maintain or improve the fortunes of the company, and recognizing and promoting internal talent can go a long way to achieving this.

Situated 9 miles (15 km) south of Sheffield, the Derbyshire town of Chesterfield has more influence from this city than it does with Derby, its county capital, 21 miles (35 km) to the south. To the east of the town the M1 passes on its Nottingham to Sheffield stretch, and the west of Derby is taken up with 3 miles (5 km) of agricultural land before the start of the Peak District National Park. Chesterfield is connected to Derby, Leicester, Rotherham and Sheffield by rail. Its current population of around 100,000 makes it the most populous town in Derbyshire, second in size only to the city of Derby.
Historically a market town, Chesterfield became associated with coal mining after the discovery of a large seam in the 19th century, when the town’s population grew rapidly. The coal was discovered during the excavation of a tunnel for George Stephenson’s Derby to Leeds railway line. During construction, Stephenson moved to Chesterfield, and it was in the town that he was to end his days, aged 67. A statue of Stephenson stands outside Chesterfield railway station. The engineering legacy continued until recently, however. Chesterfield-based Markham & Co. made the machines that excavated the Channel Tunnel, among other tunnels.
Much of the heavy industry has now left Chesterfield, and in many ways the town has returned to its Market roots, although there is understandably a much larger service and local government sector now. Occasionally, Internal Recruitment Manager positions are filled in Chesterfield, but more so in the surrounding area, particularly Sheffield.
