With strong commercial acumen, this person will manage relationships with suppliers and oversee revenue and cost budgeting. Effective negotiation will ensure ROI and Buying Managers will constantly be reviewing new sourcing opportunities as well as being involved in new product development. As a profit centre in its own right, the buying department is central to an organisation’s commercial gain.
A Buying Manager will have a multi-disciplinary role, looking after short, mid and long-term projects, chairing monthly divisional operational meetings and advising the business on key developments. The individual will typically work with other areas of the business to ensure individual brand objectives, as well as group objectives, are met.
The skills required
As an experienced manager, you will require at least 5 years’ proven track record of overseeing a team.
Strong negotiation skills are mandatory, with experience of strategic purchasing.
An ability to lead, influence and coach others is vital for this role as well as the capability to work in a fast-moving, demanding environment that requires strong organisational skills.
Highly numerate, IT literate and analytical, you will be someone who remains calm under pressure and be an adept communicator.
Flexibility is key as well as being self-driven, honest and capable of driving team member development. It’s important you are confident to challenge accepted ways of buying, and continually strive to innovate.
You will be an experienced project manager with excellent presentation skills and able to effectively report to all parts of the business, including company directors.

If Norfolk and Suffolk were to disappear underwater, and let’s hope they don’t, the Margate, Broadstairs and Ramsgate cluster would represent the UK’s easternmost point. Situated on the tip of Kent, it has long been the holiday resort of choice for many a Londoner who wants to trade the city streets for sandy beaches and fun. It was also one of the favourite Mods v Rockers battlegrounds in the 1960s, although Brighton is better known for this accolade.
Like many seaside towns of the UK, Margate went through great development in the Victorian era, boomed in the mid to late twentieth century, then declined as more and more families holidayed overseas as flights became more affordable. Margate has a population of about 60,000, which does swell a little in the summer months, but it is more a day-tripper’s destination than a holiday resort nowadays. The population has had to diversify somewhat for the town to survive, and there is now a wider range of non-tourist employment and a small amount of manufacturing taking place in the town.
Manston Airport, or Kent International Airport, is located a few miles to the south west of Margate, and handles flights to mainland Europe and the Channel Islands. The town is reasonably well connected by road and rail to London and the South Coast, too. Margate will have the kinds of logistics needs that accompany any concentration of population, which can sometimes throw Buying Manager jobs into the mix, but nearby Canterbury, Ashford or Folkestone might be better bets.
