When companies reach the upper echelons of size, status and reach, their human resources becomes more than a department; it is almost a community, a population. It is at this stage that a president and vice-president of human resources is appointed. The VP of HR immediately manages directors and senior managers in HR specialisms, ensuring they are fulfilling their roles of guiding the company in the direction set by the board. Practically speaking, this means overseeing a chain of command right down to HR staff in various locations, so a strategic mindset and an ability to communicate company policy to the senior HR team unambiguously will be a key skill.
VPs are often promoted internally, but it’s not unusual for talented and highly experienced HR professionals to land such roles from outside the company. You will need many years of experience in HR, having worked your way up the ladder through management and directorship before you can attain vice-presidency. Experience in the relevant sector is invaluable, as all industries have their own requirements and expectations.

Powys is the largest county in Wales by area, although only 11th by population (just 135,000), mainly because much of the area is mountainous. It is a landlocked county with a long border with England, meeting Shropshire and Herefordshire; it shares Welsh borders with Gwynedd, Denbighshire, Wrexham, Ceredigion, Carmarthenshire and Monmouthshire. Its administrative centre is in Llandrindod Wells, right in the centre, although it’s quite a small town, with only 5000 inhabitants. The largest town is Newtown (13,000), followed by Ystradgynlais (9,000) and Brecon (8000). Needless to say, the population comprises many, many small villages and towns.
Such low concentrations of population and alack of industrialisation mean that VP of Human Resources jobs are not in huge demand in Powys. The tourism industry can create some such jobs, but on the whole it is best to look for the towns and cities around the borders of Powys in Wales and England for a better chance of finding something.
