Findus Sweden signs up to Sedex Initiative

Findus Sweden has become the latest company to sign up to the Supplier Ethical Data Exchange (Sedex) in a bid to make its global supply chain more transparent. The food producer joins the likes of DNV Business Assurance in looking to improve the way it conducts its logistical operations and will also allow the public to understand the way in which firms of this ilk work. Officials have stated that signing up to the Sedex will assist Findus in making substantial improvements in terms of labour standards, health and safety, the environment and put more measures in place to prevent issues such as bribery and corruption from becoming a more prevalent problem. It is a poignant moment for Findus as it looks to rebuild its reputation after it became embroiled in the much-publicised horsemeat scandal. The company was forced to recall a batch of frozen lasagnes after they were found to contain up to 100 per cent equine DNA, despite being labelled as beef. It put the role of the supply chain in the spotlight for companies all across the globe as ministers demanded that more stringent testing policies were implemented. A number of other major organisations became engulfed in the issue, with the likes of Tesco and Ikea having to withdraw products after they were found to contain horsemeat. These companies have now been reassessing the way in which they use their supply chain and Findus believes that joining up to Sedex will help it to improve its operations. Inger Larsson, sustainability director of Findus Sweden, said: "Sedex tools will support us in auditing ethical and health and safety aspects in our supply chains. We welcome this support to further drive transparency and trust in the food business." Carmel Giblin, chief executive officer, of Sedex explained that Sedex works with companies to alleviate the administrative burden of engaging with thousands of global suppliers. By using Sedex companies can focus their resources on making real and lasting improvements in their supply chain. Findus’ decision to join Sedex is a demonstration of their commitment to responsible sourcing.
