Production Manager
Production teams are the lifeblood of any manufacturing organisation, so the role of the production manager is a pivotal role that links the employees on the shop floor and the senior managers and directors on the board. As production manager, you’ll be taking strategic and operational instructions from the board with regard to productivity, and converting them into actions that maximise profits for the company.
As with any managerial role, your day will partly be taken up with technical work – ordering materials, keeping machinery and supply chain operational etc. – but will also be spent dealing with personnel, whether that’s recruitment, motivation and discipline, or planning human resources for projected or seasonal needs. Of course, in larger companies, much of this work can be delegated, but you’ll still be responsible for making sure the goals of the company are met by steering the production department.

Production is a huge subject, covering the entirety of the manufacturing sector, so a production manager in a certain sector will have a very different set of responsibilities to one in another. Experience in a particular sector will therefore stand you in good stead within that industry, thanks to a knowledge of regulations, compliance and technical details too. Production manager jobs are often advertised through sector-specific channels for this reason.
That said, many of the skills of the production manager are transferable, especially in related sectors, so you shouldn’t be put off if an exciting role is advertised in an industry tangential to your current one. Scunthorpe is a town at the north of Lincolnshire roughly as far north as Grimsby on the east coast but 23 miles (37 km) inland. Its closest major neighbour is Hull, 16 miles (26 km) to the north east, and Leeds and Sheffield are both roughly 35 miles (57 km) to the west. The town originally comprised five villages, Ashby, Crosby, Brumby, Frodingham and Scunthorpe, but time merged them together and they officially collectively became Scunthorpe as we now know it, with a population of around 75,000.
The town has a rich industrial heritage, and played its part in the Industrial Revolution as a major centre for ironworks in the mid to late 1800s. These would eventually become steel works as the technology was honed. The usual story for most of these industrial boom towns is that that fell into decline in the twentieth century, but happily for Scunthorpe this is not the case. The largest single employer remains the steelworks, now owned by the Indian steel giant Tata. Thanks to the ongoing success of the steelworks, many engineering firms, large and small, are doing well in the area. Major local employers include BOC, Bell Waste Control, Nisa Today’s, 2 Sisters, Key Country Foods, The Sauce Company and Ericsson.
With such a vibrant industrial history and the whole spectrum of industry from heavy to light, Production Manager jobs can appear in Scunthorpe from time to time.
