Materials Manager jobs
Keeping track of stock is an essential part of any business, and this is especially true in the manufacturing industry where levels of raw materials and components must be carefully monitored to ensure that production can continue unimpeded.
This is the role of a materials manager. The person in this position is responsible for maintaining accurate and sufficient inventories and working with other teams to anticipate changes in demand - such as seasonal fluctuations or increases caused by new marketing campaigns.
Depending on the company and the job specification, tasks will involve overseeing stocks and taking steps to quickly and efficiently deal with problems. You will also need to ensure storage facilities comply with hygiene standards, health and safety protocols and internal company policies.
As materials manager, you may be responsible for various procurement or logistics jobs, such as ordering supplies, organising transport and dealing with shipments and helping to resolve issues with short or wrong deliveries.
The skills required
Anyone seeking to take on a role as a materials manager should have strong interpersonal, communication and supervisory skills are all essential, and you should be able to analyse situations and plan effectively based on the available research and evidence.
You should also be comfortable using relevant computer technology, such as spreadsheet and database programs as well as enterprise resource planning (ERP) software.
Materials Manager Jobs in Surrey
Located in the South East of England, Surrey shares borders with Kent, East and West Sussex, Hampshire and Berkshire, as well as Greater London, making it one of the Home Counties.
There are many large towns and villages in Surrey - such as Woking, Guildford, Ewell, Epsom and Redhill - making it a suitable choice for those seeking Materials Manager opportunities. What's more, with much of the county being considered part of the London commuter belt, it's also a good location for those who want to work in the capital but live away from the city.
For much of Surrey's modern history, the region has been known for paper manufacturing and gunpowder. However, these were in steep decline by the early 20th century and new industries took over, such as bicycle and car manufacture.
The McLaren Group, one of the best-known names in automotives, is based here. It has manufacturing and administration facilities in Woking and has also opened a technology centre for research and development.
Some of the region's other top employers include engineering firm WS Atkins, Philips Electronics, Colgate-Palmolive and Ericsson. There's also a large Alexander Dennis factory in the area, which manufactures chassis for buses and fire engines.
