Their principal role is to make sure the strategic business plans of the board are fulfilled from the HR perspective, which means that they will have to make key decisions on recruitment, training and redundancies as necessary. The HR manager could be part of a team of managers under an HR director, and could be in charge of an HR team or working independently, depending on the size and structure of the company. The skills required
A background in HR is an essential element of this role, preferably to management level but many companies recognize that HR is often a one-person job in many small to medium companies and the skill-set picked up will be advanced despite the lack of a formal management title. If the experience is in the same industry as that of the position being filled, that will be a bonus, as different sectors have widely varying HR needs.
You also need to be an excellent communicator with a proven ability to take strategic instructions from the board and interpret them into actionable plans that bring measurable benefits to the company. Many companies require CIPD or equivalent work-based training qualifications as an entry condition, but others may be willing to take talented HR professionals through to such qualifications.
