Head of Materials jobs
In the manufacturing industry, keeping production on schedule is essential for business stability. This relies on having adequate stocks of components and raw materials.
Whether a company makes computers or children’s toys, food, beverages, pharmaceuticals or something else, the head of materials is responsible for ensuring that the stock levels are maintained and that products are sourced within budget and to the required quality standards.
Depending on the particulars of the role and the nature of the company, the head of materials will be charged with ordering supplies, tracking shipments, liaising with other departments to keep up with market trends and to continuously look for ways to drive efficiencies without compromising on customer satisfaction.
The role may also involve maintaining hygiene levels in storage areas - this is especially true of the food and beverage industry - as well as renegotiating contracts, researching new suppliers and reporting on key performance indicators.
The skills required
Those applying for a role as head of materials should be able to demonstrate good managerial skills and be confident in your ability to communicate with staff, stakeholders and customers.
Successful candidates should have good commercial awareness and always be on the lookout for ways to make improvements.
In addition, as head of materials you will need to have a degree of IT literacy and knowledge of the various computer programs and systems used in the industry. For instance, an ability to use spreadsheets and databases is a must, while familiarity with the Microsoft Office package can also be a useful skill.
Head of Materials Jobs in Nuneaton
The county of Warwickshire forms a kidney shape wrapping around the north, east and south of Birmingham, and up at its north-eastern edge is the town on Nuneaton. If the whole borough of Nuneaton and Bedworth is counted, its population of this mini conurbation is around 125,000, making it the most populous in Warwickshire (a county with no cities). Nuneaton is 9 miles (14 km) north of Coventry and 20 miles (32 km) east of Birmingham. It is well connected to the M6, M69 and A5 and, as any traveller from the North West to London will know, is a stop on the railway express route into and out of the capital.
The town was little more than a hamlet in the Middle Ages, but its population shot up during the 18th and 19th centuries as industrialisation reached the town. Nearby coal fields helped boost the population, although industrial Nuneaton became best known for its textiles, as well as brick-making, tile-making and brewing. During World War 2 the town was a prime target because it was the site of several munitions factories.
Nuneaton today does have a commercial sector but it is one of the main commuter towns for Birmingham, Coventry and Leicester. The town is the location of the headquarters of dried fruit and alternative medicine seller Holland and Barrett, and RS Components and Dairy Crest have national distribution centres at Bermuda Park, just outside the town. Many factors combine to make Nuneaton a promising place to look for Head of Materials work, so it’s always worth keeping an out on our pages or getting in touch for future vacancies.
